Unincorporated Chambers County has no county building-code, electrical, plumbing or mechanical permit. The county charges a $150 development permit for each residential structure (homes, additions, remodels, shops, pools, driveways and patios; non-habitable buildings under 400 square feet and fences are exempt) and a commercial building permit of $150, $250 or $450 by building size, plus a Fire Marshal plans review of $100 per 10,000 square feet and a $1,000 drainage review deposit on new commercial sites. Work started without a permit pays double, and online payments add a 3% convenience fee. Work inside a city's limits is permitted by that city.
In Unincorporated Chambers County, a building permit for a $50,000 remodel runs $150.00 in permit fees, and a $20,000 re-roof $150.00. Totals include the documented surcharges and minimum fees. Each figure is that single permit only: a job that combines trades, like a kitchen remodel with electrical and plumbing work, pays each applicable permit. Apply online through the My Government Online (MGO) portal. For a residential project, upload proof of property ownership (deed, appraisal district record or tax record) and a design or floor plan of the structure; a project in a flood zone may need an elevation certificate. For a commercial project, first request a Development Review Committee meeting at www.chamberscountytx.gov/DRCForm, then submit civil and drainage review plans and the building application and plans through the portal for Environmental Health, drainage and Fire Code review. Fire alarm, fire sprinkler and vent hood suppression systems need a separate Fire Marshal permit through the same portal. Once approvals are complete and fees are paid, the permit is issued by email and can be downloaded from the portal. Pay online by credit card or in person at the Permit Office, 201-A Airport Road, Anahuac; residential fees may also be mailed to P.O. Box 1180, Anahuac, TX 77514. Commercial buildings must be inspected by the Fire Marshal and receive a Certificate of Compliance before occupancy.
