Fort Bend County's Engineering Department issues development permits inside the Town of Thompsons under an interlocal agreement. Apply online through the county's MyGovernmentOnline portal at mgoconnect.org (create an account, then a Residential or Commercial Development Permit application); a Residential Development Permit is required for any new structure on residential property, or addition to an existing structure, of 400 square feet or more, and work in the floodplain needs a permit too. New structures need a CenterPoint address verification letter, and an application includes a site plan, the recorded deed, a metes and bounds description for property outside a platted subdivision, septic design drawings where a septic system will serve the structure, and other agencies' permits. Commercial projects first get County Engineer approval of civil construction drawings. Fees are paid to the county, and work started before the permit is issued pays double.
